The Bush Administration created legislation, ironically, named the USA PATRIOT Act. Many parts of this legislation take away checks on law enforcement and threaten the very rights and freedoms we struggle to protect. For example, without a warrant and without probable cause, law enforcement has the power to access your private medical records, library records, e-mail, Internet traffic and student records -and can prevent anyone from telling you it was done.1 A US citizen can be declared an enemy combatant without proof offered and held indefinitely without counsel.
