To
waste, to destroy, our natural resources ... will result in undermining
in the days of our children the very prosperity which we ought
by right to hand down to them amplified and developed"
-Theodore Roosevelt, December
3, 1907
The Bush Administration delayed regulations
to reduce arsenic levels in drinking water, repealed forest service
regulations on roadless areas, rejected the international global
warming treaty, announced support for drilling in the nation's
national monuments and broke its campaign promise to require mandatory
carbon dioxide emission reductions - all within its first ten
weeks in office.1
This administration has continued to actively
dismantle environmental protection programs. The Sierra Club calls
Bush's "Clear Skies" initiative a smokescreen for more
pollution.2
According to the National Natural Resources
Defense Council, the administration's "Healthy Forests"
initiative exploits the fear of fires in order to gut environmental
protections and boost commercial logging.3
These two examples are just the tip of the
iceberg.
